Create a No-Lead Micro-Scratch Finish

  American Machinist Magazine

Compact and easy to use, the Model 1040XE is a vertical-spindle microfinishing (superfinishing) machine from IMPCO Machine Tools, Lansing, Michigan USA. It removes the effects of grinder chatter, improves circular geometry, and creates a no-lead micro-scratch finish on pins and shafts, permitting perfect seals between rotating parts.

Parts rotate as precision-machined tooling made to mirror the final profile of the workpiece feeds downward, pushing abrasive film against the part for a specific amount of time and at a preset pressure.

With each machine cycle, the abrasive film indexes automatically to provide fresh, aggressive media to each part. In a typical application, the abrasive film roll supplies up to one week of uninterrupted production. An optional tape cutter simplifies used-tape disposal.

The machine handles diameters from 0.250 to 2.500 in. and lengths up to 27.6 in., at rates in excess of 200 parts/hour. Shops with the 1040XE can process ferrous, nonferrous, and ceramic materials using precise controllable stock removal rates.

Fully programmable machine parameters include shoe pressure and oscillation, spindle speed from 50-600 rpm, cycle duration, and abrasive-film index. To minimize vibration and machine wear, variable oscillation speeds up to 600 rpm are limited to the finishing shoes.

Capable of two-level microfinishing (superfinishing), the 1040XE can be equipped with robot loading and optional size control. Tooling and workpiece handling created for specific parts can easily be changed to accommodate a different part.

Changeover for different part diameters and thrust-wall widths, which includes the replacement of quick-change tooling, takes minutes to complete. And, all process parameters are programmable through the touch screen control.

While the machine accommodates up to five microfinishing (superfinishing) heads to process multiple part diameters or multiple parts, its compact modular design adapts to a range of production requirements. These include everything from stand-alone to several modules in sequence with automated part handling.
