IMPCO Eliminates Chromium from Machine Tools | June 2006 In Europe, a new EU specification bans the use chromium because it is said to contain carcinogens. The new rule includes a ban on the use of chrome-plating on machine tools and components. This may be a difficulty for some machine builders as all of the steel plumbing on machines is typically chrome-plated so it does not require painting after assembly. On a recent microfinishing machine order for Ford Dagenham (engine plant) in England, IMPCO Machine Tools, Lansing, Michigan, became one of the first US machine tool companies to comply with the new specification. According to a company spokesman, “On this machine, which microfinishes the bearing journals on the crankshaft for the Ford engine, we used tubing and fittings plated with a Trivalent chrome6 Free material. We were able to purchase some product plated that way; other components required a supplier to strip the chrome and re-plate with a safe material. It was a challenge, and it was costly, but IMPCO was successful in meeting the requirement for the customer. We believe that eventually all machine tools globally will be required to use this chrome-free material,” he said. |
